About 500th Anniv. Of The Death Of Ferdinand Magellan

The Portuguese sailor Ferdinand Magellan (Sabrosa, 1480 - Mactan Island, 1521) organized a trip around the world under the Spanish flag. He set out on a journey around the world in 1519 with five ships. Sailing along the coast of South America and through a passage, which would be named after him, the Strait of Magellan, he reached the Pacific Ocean in 1520.

In 1521, he reached the first inhabited island (probably the Mariana Islands) which he would name the Island of Thieves because on the first day, while the tormented and hungry crew could not react, the locals stole everything from their ships. Continuing his journey he reached the islands of Samar and Cebu in the Philippines. In a battle with the natives, on the Island of Mactan, Magellan was killed. Of the five ships that set out on the expedition, only one returned to Spain. It was the ship Victoria under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcan. This journey, which began under Magellan's command, sailed around the Earth for the first time. (Željka Šaravanja)
