National Programme for Tuberculosis
The National Programme for Tuberculosis, although recent, is the result of a long journey in the response to tuberculosis in Portugal.
History tells us how innovation in treatments, devoted care of patients, the implementation of the vaccination plan and primary care actions at national level, have allowed for the spread of the disease to be controlled.
Currently, in Portugal, as in the rest of Europe, a sustained and progressive decline in incidence of tuberculosis has been recorded. The aim of eliminating the disease by 2035, although ambitious, is within the reach of all of us. Increased health literacy in relation to tuberculosis is an important tool in the swift identification of warning signs and symptoms and in the decision to seek the required health care. Reminding people of tuberculosis is fundamental!
Alerting, raising awareness and knowledge, and learning about the successes and failures in the control of tuberculosis will allow us to maintain the downward trend of its occurrence.
The National Programme for Tuberculosis is joining forces with CTT and the National Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association in this initiative, reinforcing the idea that “Tuberculosis has a cure”.
