75 Years of the First General Assembly of the United Nations
January 10, 2021 marked the 75th anniversary of the first General Assembly of the United Nations (UN). The organization itself celebrated its 75th anniversary last year. Philately Liechtenstein commemorates this memorable event with the special stamp “75 years of the first General Assembly of the United Nations” (face value CHF 5.20), which was held in Westminster Central Hall in London in 1946 with the participation of 51 countries.
The stamp is in the typical blue of the association and shows the anniversary logo as well as the arrow used in it in different colors. The symbol, pointing diagonally upwards, represents the global movement in the present and the future, while the colors indicate the diversity.
Today the United Nations comprises 193 member states. Liechtenstein joined the association on September 18, 1990 as the 160th member. According to its charter, the most important tasks of the organization are securing world peace, observing international law, protecting human rights and promoting international cooperation. The General Assembly meets annually in September at the UN headquarters in New York City.
