Portuguese Autochthonous Breeds
About Portuguese Autochthonous Breeds
Following the 2018 and 2019 philatelic collections, the breeds included in this year’s issue (two horse breeds, two cattle breeds, one sheep breed and one goat breed) demonstrate not only the richness of our livestock heritage, but also the challenges of its conservation. Despite signi cant changes in rural areas in recent decades, these breeds still play a demonstrably important role in activities such as meat production, re prevention, tourism and leisure and as part of complete and balanced ecosystems.
Proving the need for existing conservation programs, as well as the relevance of awareness-raising actions about them, the third group of this stamp issue includes representation of two breeds classi ed as “highly endangered”.
