About 215 Years of Sveti Duh Clinical Hospital in Zagreb

As the bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac said at the establishment of the Foundation Hospital in 1804, man and his dignity must always be put first, regardless of class, religion, sex and nationality. Cherishing the long tradition, marking of the 215th anniversary of “Sveti Duh” Clinical Hospital reflects the continuity of providing health care services and proves that this Hospital still is one of the most important health care institutions in Croatia.

As the oldest hospital in the Republic of Croatia, through its continuous work and great dedication, “Sveti Duh” has developed from a hospital of local and national significance into an internationally renowned and recognised modern medical institution. This is proven by the fact that the only WHO collaborating clinical centre in the Republic of Croatia was established at the Hospital’s Eye Clinic.

Ever since 1812, when the institution became the first teaching hospital in Croatia, and since the mid- and late 20th century and performing of cataract surgery, ovariectomy and laparoscopic surgery for the first time, “Sveti Duh” has been the first to apply new discoveries and modern technologies with the primary purpose of helping people. The latest project, which includes the addition of a day-care hospital and underground garage, supports the continuity of providing state-of-the-art health care services. This will allow the centuries-old tradition of the Hospital to be kept alive by making the vision of progress a reality, as it was imagined by its founder and owner, the City of Zagreb.
