Husein-paša’s Mosque in Pljevlja was built in 1569. It was founded by Husein-paša Boljanić, originally from Boljanići near Pljevlja. In the second half of XVI century, he held some of the most responsible military and civil positions in the Ottoman Empire. The main architect was the famous builder Hajrudin, while the construction was done by masters from Dubrovnik.
The Mosque is 17,20 meters high and 13,10 m wide. The interior is illuminated with 25 windows. Outside, there is a minaret 42 meters high, dominated by a nicely made gallery, decorated with stalactites. Its architectural harmony puts it among the most valuable sacral structures of the Oriental-Islamic culture in the area of the Balkans. On the initiative of the Islamic Community of Montenegro, Montenegro Post is publishing a commemorative issue for special occasions “450 anniversary of the Husein-paša's Mosque” - commemorative stamp and first day envelope. Author of the design is Zoran Popović, graphic designer from Podgorica.
