About Maritime Malta Series VII ‘Vessels of the Order

This issue consists of 2 stamps featuring a ceremonial boat and a gondola, dating back to the Order of Saint John in Malta.

The 26c Stamp depicts a model known as the 'Felucca Dorada' - the gilded felucca. This double - ended ceremonial boat was assigned to the Captain General of the Galley. The boat was equipped with a canopy made from damask fabric with a frieze that surrounded the awnings. This craft was used to transport the Captain and other dignitaries within the harbour area. The image on the stamp is a model on display at the Malta Maritime Museum. Model builder unknown.

The 5.00 stamp depicts a model of the gondola of Grand Master Adrien de Wignacourt. It was the official ceremonial barge and carried the standard with the emblem of the Grand Master showing the 'fleur-de-lis' symbol. The term gondola was applied because of the rounded forward and aft stems and it was propelled by two oars on each side. The richly decorated, carved and gilded wooden cabin surmounted by an orb and a cross was set in the middle of this gondola and the entrance to the cabin faced the bow. The sheer of this double-ended boat was also decorated with gilded carvings all way through the length of its hull. This period model is on display at the Malta Maritime Museum. Model builder unknown
