Centuries of Turkish rule made from Banja Luka, the Bosnian Kasaba, and only with Austria-Hungary occupied our lands shall be entered into the spirit of Europe in almost all spheres of life, and in education. At that time, there is a foundation of modern cultural and educational societies and institutions, and in October 4th 1895 was established the ''Big Real'', with the aim to prepare students for the foresters, for agricultural and chemical and other high school. Big Real was initially reserved for male adolescents, and girls are eligible to attend only in 1912. as extraordinary, and since 1919 as full-time students. The first generation have observed most of mathematics, drawing and geometry, and gradual transformation of the ''Big Real'' in Real Gimnasium, beginning in 1912, attention is shifting from these subjects to languages (Serbo-Croat, German, French) and history, and introduced the 16-th item , Latin. Ratings ranged from one (best) to four (insufficient).

Except that the priority was pedagogy, Gimnasium at an early age became a cultural, scientific, and national institution. Autumn 1918th will bring the end of the Austro-ungarian 40-year government, which will open a new page in the past of Gymnasium. Over the years, until World War II, will happen constant innovations and changes. Second World War brought even more suffering and expelled students and teachers from their classrooms in other facilities. Many former and then students and some teachers will have to replace classrooms and chalk with forests and rifles. Traces of World War II were indelible, and from year to year the school had a lot of problems and challenges. Sixties were all over the country announcing the time of relative prosperity. However, in Banja Luka will not be so, 1969. The "Capital of Krajina" affects a large earthquake and causing immense damage. One of the affected building, which was the pride of Banja Luka is a popular seventy years old ''Bastille''. As such, at the site of a former medical school, at Zmaj Jovina Street, will sprout a new modern building of red brick. Banja Luka Gymnasium is one of the first secondary schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the number of students is one of the largest in Europe.
