Tomb stones are medieval tombstones in the form of large stones, sometimes with engraved pictorial decoration or inscriptions. They originated from the 11th to the end of the 15th century.
So far, more than 66,478 tombstones have been found, of which more than 58,547 have been found in today's Bosnia and Herzegovina.
More than 5,600 tombstones are decorated most often: vaulted roses, rosettes, crosses, shields and swords, bow and arrows, human and animal figures, deer shooting scenes, tournaments, geometric ornaments and the like.
Of the total of 363 tombstones with inscriptions, over 350 tombstones bear Cyrillic letters.
The monument of the Gost Milutin comes from Humski near Foca. Gost Milutin died in the first half of the 14th century. On one side of the monument a Gost figure was created as a teacher. He holds a stick in one hand as a symbol of dignity, and in another book as a sign of his function. In the upper part, it is shown frontally while its legs are in profile. He's dressed in a long dress. The other two panels are filled with ornaments in the shape of a spirally twisted rope. On the fourth floor there are small decorations, among which there is a clear circular rosette.
Tombstone of Gost Milutin is especially interesting for its sculpture and pure ornamental musculature, but also for the first time showing how the dignitaries of the Bosnian church looked like. As such it is a valuable monument in both historical and cultural meaning.
In the area of Rogatica municipality there are 2 628 tombstones, at 88 sites. Tombstones and obelisks from the horned region are especially important due to their shapes, epigraphics and especially, due to decorative stone processing and equipment.
Tombstone from Spa Stijene near Rogatica has original decorations on three sides. On one side is a carved horseman. On one shorter side, he was carved on a cradle on a stand, and on the other side of the shorter side, he was on the same such a stand with the head of another man and with a stick.
Today, both these tombstones are kept in the garden of the National Museum in Sarajevo.
