About Ethnological Treasure - The Loom

One of the most important elements of a society’s identity is the preservation of tradition, cultural heritage and ethnological treasure. Many generations have made various fabrics and clothes in looms.

The loom is one of the oldest machines used by men to meet the basic needs of clothes in rural households. On his roller-wooden mechanism, beautiful threads are applied (longitudinal threads – the warp and transverse threads - weft), which are then bonded and compressed into dense weaving.

As the weaving looms differ from each other by a horizontal and vertical warp, so there are different weaving techniques. The basic row material for weaving was sheep wool which was used for making clothes, bags, blankets… A variety of fabrics could have been made from weaving, and women how did this could express their knowledge through a combination of colors and samples.

Handcrafts like woven clothing are precious heritage of the past and looms are today part of the ethnological collections. (Željka Šaravanja)
