The Universal Postal Union was established in 1874 as the second oldest international organization. The main headquarters of the Universal Postal Union is in Bern, Switzerland.
Today, the Universal Postal Union has 190 member countries and is directed towards the development of cooperation between postal operators with the goal to secure accessibility of modern postal services on a global level.
The Universal Postal Union is especially active in fields of advising, intermediation and technical assistance to national postal operators.
Also, the Universal Postal Union is responsible for setting rules that regulate the international postal transport and stimulate the quality development of postal services. In the 130 years that the Universal Postal Union has been functioning, postal services have become a part of the everyday lives of millions of people all around the world.
We could easily say that today, the Universal Postal Union plays a leading role in the promotion of the continuing revitalization of the postal system and services.
The Croatian post Mostar has decided, by issuing this commemorative postal stamp “World Post Day- 130th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union”,. to draw attention to the importance of the Universal Postal Union in a world of global communication.
