Andersen was born. In Denmark he is considered to be the creator of the Danish realism prose. His writings were translated into more then 80 languages and were the inspiration for the creation of many theatrical works, ballet performances, movies, sculptures and paintings.
In the beginning he writes prose and poetic works, and somewhat later on, he starts with his famous traveling which was his inspiration for his makings. When his presently famous fairy tales appeared, the public and critics did not pay much attention to them, even though they were the best that Andersen ever wrote and the reason why he became one of the most popular names in the literary world. Andersen’s stories or fairy tales in the beginning were lively and lovable story-tellings of what he had heard in his childhood, and afterwards he himself made them come alive. Some of Andersen’s most popular fairy tales are: The Ugly Duckling, The Brave Tin Soldier, The Little Mermaid, and The princess on the pea.
After a lifetime enriched with literary work and traveling Andersen dies on August 4th 1875 in Copenhagen as an honorary professor and honorary citizen of Odensea
Ivana Brlić Mažuranić was born in Ogulin on April 18th 1874 in the prominent family Mažuranić. The genuine attention to her work was accomplished in 1913 with the children’s novel The Mervelous Adventures and Misadventures of Hlapic the apprentice, while her most successful work is considered to be the tale collection Tales of Long ago(1916), by which she rapidly gained the title “the Croatian Andersen”. Her imagination was playful; she was in touch with Slavic mythology and created unforgettable characters with magical names like Vjest, Ljutiša, Potjeh, Stribor, Malik, Tinilinić, Kosjenka. Many of her characters became synonyms for people’s moral and emotional characteristics.
Renowned by Croatian and foreign critics, she entered the Croatian literary world as the best children’s writer. Translated into all major world languages. She died n Zagreb on September 21st 1938.
