Vjetrenica is the largest and most known cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is in the south-eastern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the very west end of the Popovo firleds, in Ravno municipality. Visitors are often in awe by the beauty of the underwater watercourses and waterfalls, chambers and passages. It is also unique by it forceful „wind“, or to be more exact, by the physical appearance of an air flow by which the constant interior and alterative exterior air temperature is equalised.
The mythological history of Vjetrenica has occurred on the Vilino guvno (Fairy's plain), where fairies would sing and dance the fairy dance, and the star of them would be fairy Vjetrenica. Records of the duke from Ston, duke Sorkočević from 1582. say: „People of that land say that in that cave live nymphs, in our language they would be called fairies that in the night arrange dances…“Fairies are girls of unspeakable beauty and noble attributes. They made bonds with young people, protected them and cured them with therapeutic herbs.
The heather (Calluna vulgaris) is an evergreen bushy plant with white, pink, purple or red flowers. It blooms from July to September and can grow from 20 to 50 cm. It is appreciated as a therapeutic plant, and in the area around Popovo fields is very dominant. The very respected therapeutic heather honey is best used as an addition to warm tea.
