Sails have brought man closer to the distant areas, shortened the time, bridged seas and oceans and introduced navigation skillfulness into the golden age by revealing the whole world to mankind. Thanks to the sailboats, many nations, cultures, traditions and customs became known to us. Until the steam machine was invented all ships had existed in a form of sailboats with the exception of the paddle-driven ships although they frequently had sails and used wind as the auxiliary drive. Fast and powerful motor driven ships gained the domination over the world seas several centuries ago. However, sailboats have still remained the unequalled devices serving as the floating classrooms for the future seamen.
At the sailboats encounter with the sea is the most direct and completely natural. Today sailboats are mainly used for training of the future seamen, for the sport competition as well as for the different tourist events. All manifestations on the sailboats are dedicated to the peace and reminiscence on the times when these “beauties of the sea” were the only visitors of the sea distant areas. Each national navy proudly accentuates its sailboats as they also bring with themselves the stories of the ancient time. Motif on the stamp is the three-masts sailboat of the “barcantine” type. The author of the stamp is Maja Čejović from Podgorica.
