Europa - Musical Instruments
Gusle is a traditional instrument from the south Balkans with one or sometimes two strings. It is usually made of maple wood. As a single-string instrument, gusle can be found in Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Dalmatia. The strings are made of thirty twisted horse hairs, as well as the cord of the bow. Gusle played an important role in the history of Montenegrin epic poetry, since gusle players – folk singers had sung about the events from the national history for centuries, before those texts were finally written down. The Montenegro Post is publishing a commemorative postage stamp, a block and a First Day envelope within the edition “EUROPE Gusle”.The author of the conceptual design is Marko Zogović, a graphic designer from Podgorica.
