About International Day of Families

Young individuals leave their happy families and home environment filled with love with beliefs and attitudes in building a new and better future. The International Day of families was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1989 and was celebrated for the first time on May 15th, 1994. A special emphasis is put on the importance which the international community puts on the family as the elementary community in our societies.

In families, children get to know about life, surrounded by love, they teach us about commitments and duties. Kind family relationships are the foundation of developing positive relationships of children towards people because this small community has a large responsibility. Children are life’s joy, and a close and linked family raises quality individuals that will change the future to the better.

Throughout history, families had the most efficient upbringing performance. Today, when we live in times of alienation and imposed behavioral norms, it is of crucial importance to raise awareness on how parents are essential in children’s upbringing. And besides the love of parents, sibling love, as well as the love of grandparents is of utmost significance. All of them have an irreplaceable role in a child’s development and create an environment of cohesion and closeness in which children grow up to be happy people. (Željka Šaravanja)
