The Nordic House in Reykjavik 50th Anniversary
The Nordic House is a cultural institution situated in a building with the same name in Reykjavík. The Nordic House aims at promoting cooperation and strengthening ties between Iceland and other Nordic countries. The house was designed by acclaimed Finnish modernist architect Alvar Aalto, and built in 1968. It includes a library, a restaurant and halls which are rented out for exhibitions, conferences and meetings. The Nordic House is a venue for front row activities in the Icelandic cultural calendar, such as the Reykjavík Film Festival, the Reykjavík Literature Festival, Iceland Airwaves, the Art Festival of Reykjavik and the Nordic Fashion Bicentennial, an event originally instigated by the Nordic House.
The Nordic House has also organized and initiated a diverse program of cultural events and exhibitions. Its library is the largest of its kind in the Nordic countries, providing access to books, newspapers and magazines in seven Nordic languages: Danish, Finnish, Faroese, Greenlandic, Norwegian, Saami and Swedish. Guests can also borrow audio books and download e-books through the library‘s website. It also features an artoteque with graphic designs by Nordic artists.
