About Europa - Bridges

Stamp issues with the EUROPA logo, that are issued by all PostEurop members, have bridges as a theme for the year 2018. Croatian Post Mostar on its stamps present two bridges that are known as the most beautiful and oldest bridges in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Roman bridge in Plandište is the only preserved stone bridge built on the Bosnia river and is a national monument of B&H. The remnants of the Neolithic, Illyric and Roman settlements give testimony that the area around the river basin of Bosnia has been inhabited for ages. The bridge was located on the intersection of essential roads and was immured with carved limestones. In the grate (korkaluk), a spolia was built-in, a stone plate on which surface was a shallow molding that shows a naked figure in a standing-up position.

The Roman bridge on the Šujica river is located on the intersection of the strategic roads, and above the river spring lie the remnants of the Roman fortress Stržanj. Šujica, its natural watercourse that is long about 40 km, is called the most devious river in the world. This sinking creek runs through the Šujica fields and through the canyon pierces into the Duvanjsko fields and plunges in Kovači. This area was inhabited for ages, and the oldest inhabitants were the Illyric tribe Delmati. This bridge should also be proclaimed as a national monument of B&H in the near future.
