Ethnological Treasure - Hemp and Spindle

Contemporary way of life erases many old skills and knowledge, we forget things and tools which were, not far ago, a component part of life. Among them, hemp with spindle takes a special place, one of the main subjects of our folk art, whose beauty of creation even today arouses attention. Cutting, design and carving wood has been known since ancient times and represents one of the most widespread aspects of arts expression.

Hemp has its own place in traditional way of life. It was a property of women who as a little girl learned how to purr. Prepared and combed wool which was purring into thread, respectively into wool thread which spool around hemp, was put on carved and decorated hemp. Purred threads were ready for weave or knitting.

Hemps were considered as a gift of love because they were made and given to girls by boys, fathers to daughters, husbands to wives, and sons to mothers. Especially it was looked out for their beauty so the way of creation and richness of decorations and design represent a nice piece of art expression of folk creation.
