Bosnian and Herzegovinan dendroflora by its numerous species is one of the most riches in Europe, but with uncontrolled activities by men against nature many plant species will decay.
Accompanied by Tree Day, Croatian post Mostar has issued postage mark on which will be shown oskorusa (Sorbus domestica), deciduous tree of Rosaceae family, species that slowly decay because it is proliferated difficult in nature.
Oskorusa commonly grows in south and middle Europe, Persia and northwest Africa. It grows very slowly and may live up to 500 years. It flourishing the best in deep and soil fertilities, at altitude of 650m in middle Europe and at altitude of 1400m in Mediterranean area. It bear drought very well, and in winter can stand temperature of -30°C. It reaches a maximum height of 15 – 20 meters high with rightly developed timber and ovate treetop. Leaves are pinnate and consist of 13 to 21 tight, oblong, serrate leaflets. It blooms in April and May; flowers are hermaphrodite, gleaned in thick 6-10cm wide groups of flowers. Apparent fruits are crummy and in a pear shape and they can be goose green or grayish-brown. They mellow in October and November, they have acidity taste, and after they stand for wail and first frosts they become brown, tender, tasty and sweet.
Fruits of oskorusa are eaten rough and refined in jam and stewed fruits, liquers and juices, and they are eaten by roe deers and deers. Timber of oskorusa is very appreciated and from it is made very expensive furniture, butt gun, harpsichord, Scottish bagpipe and others.
