About Christmas and New Year

On 25th December Christian people celebrate birth of the child Jesus Christ and Christmas Holiday accompanied by several Christmas customs, congratulation and bestowal.

Advent is preparation time for coming and the birth of Jesus Christ. In nowadays the most present sign of Advent is Advent corona, which is knitted in a way that there is neither beginning nor the end and it signifies the God who is eternal. Christmas preparation starts on the 25th November, on the St.Catherine’s Day, and after that are following days of St. Barbara, St.Nicholas and St. Lucy.
Till today the custom of wheat seeding has been conserved but the custom of entering the Christmas and the spread of reed under the Christmas table on the Christmas Eve, when the people prayerfully watch expecting the birth of the Christ, has almost vanished. The most noticeable Christmas symbol is Christmas tree under which the day nursery are putted that point on the event which is celebrating – the night of Jesus birth and clearly signifying that He is born in the stable.

The New Year family fete is very similar to Christmas; therewith Christmas is oriented to immediate family, and the New Year to the relatives and friends. Christmas Holidays are over on the 6th January, when the Church is celebrating the Epiphany, the campaign of the three wise men from the East who came to bow to a little baby Jesus, bringing Him the gifts: myrtle, gold and incense. Set of Christmas customs are ending with the holiday of Epiphany.
