Motorsports
Motorsport is relatively young to Iceland and has been enjoying increased popularity in recent years. The Quarter Mile Club was founded June 6th 1975 and started sponsoring car shows and sand drag competitions in that same year. A racing track was opened south of Hafnarfjörður in 1980, which at that time was the only specially constructed racing track in Europe. Since 1980 the club has sponsored Icelandic championship competitions in numerous car and motorcycle categories. Club members numbered around 700 in 2009. Rally Reykjavik, staged by The Reykjavik Automobile Sports club (BIKR), has always been the biggest event of the Icelandic motorsport calendar. BIKR was founded 1977 and has since then been involved with almost all aspects of motorsport, rallycross, sand drag racing and formula off-road. Off-road sports started late in the eighties and have been one of the most popular motorsports in Iceland. Motocross is a mixture of motorcycle sports and off-road competitions held on closed and specially designed tracks.
