Latvijas Pasts has released a new stamp and a cover in the series Latvian Architecture, this time dedicated to the Academic Centre for Natural Sciences of the University of Latvia in Torņakalns. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place in theNature House of the Academic Centre for Natural Sciences at 1 Jelgavas Street, Riga, from 9 AM to 5 PM on the 28th of September 2017.

The face value of the new stamp is € 1.39, which corresponds to the cost of sending a registered Class B letter, and its print run is 150,000 copies. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 1,500 copies. The stamp and the cover have been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva.

The Academic Centre for Natural Sciences is the first institution of higher education which has been completely newly built since the restoration of Latvia’s independence and is one of the most modern educational and scientific centres in Europe. The Centre has seven floors, featuring modern lecture halls, laboratories, workshop and seminar rooms, as well as a library, while on the top floor of the building there is a special scientific greenhouse.

The construction of the building commenced in March 2014 and completed in September 2015. The idea of the Centre’s building was developed and the designer supervision was carried out by the architectural firm Sestais Stils, while the construction was conducted by the general partnership LNK Industries Group. In 2016 the Academic Centre for Natural Sciences and its authors received the Annual Riga Architecture Award.
