About Kaunas` Oak-Wood
Oakwood park is one of the most popular parks for the inhabitants of Kaunas. It‘s a recreational and sporting area. The park covers about 84 hectares and is the largest oak grove growing within the boundaries of a city across the entire Europe. Most of the trees are oaks ranging in age from 100 to 320 years old. It also holds linden, birch and maple trees. In 1938 Tadas Ivanauskas established the Kaunas Zoo in the northern corner of the park. Later, in 1966 the Volley of Songs was installed. Each spring, the traditional annual Festival of Songs and Dances held at the Valley of Songs located near Oakwood Park. In 1986 Kaunas Oakwood Park was nominated as a natural monument of state importance.
