About FIFA Centennial

Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was found on May 21st 1904. The foundation act was signed by the authorized sports representatives of the following associations: France, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. All that these associations want is to promote this sport.

The first official international match took place in Brussels, on May 1st 1904 between Belgium and France; at that time, FIFA included only European football associations.

With the first international match, the idea of a larger federation appeared, which included countries all around the world. This has happened starting with the year 1909, when countries from overseas joined FIFA.

At the beginning, international football matches were taking place as part of the Olympic Games. The fame of the Olympic Games intensified FIFA’s wish for its own world championship. A new epoch had begun for world football when the first World Cup started at the Montevido stadium, on July 18th 1930. Today’s matches enjoy a great success, winning over fans from a very wide range of social classes, cultures and races.

Romania is a country with a very old football tradition and with a long series of participations at FIFA’s competitions.

The large number of National Football Associations, as well as the great number of supporters make FIFA one of the great and certainly one of the most popular federations in the world.

On the occasion of a century of existence, many manifestations dedicated to the “king of sports” will take place.

Many countries will participate to mark this event. Romfilatelia joins this approach, as part of a great philatelic program, by releasing one postage stamp.
