The Romanian Post is launching one postage stamp of 21,000 lei (ROL) dedicated to a beloved subject, Valentine’s Day.
The history of this day and its patron, Saint Valentine, is shrouded in mystery, but we do know that February has long been a month of romance. Its origins date back from the time of the Romans.
One legend tells that during the reign of the Emperor Claudius there was a Christian priest named Valentine. When Claudius decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine defied him and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. For his sacrifice for the Christian faith, he is considered a saint.
During the Middle Ages, the celebration of Valentine’s Day has extended in most of Europe, especially in France and England.
In modern times, this day of 14th of February became an occasion for everyone to express their love by sending valentine cards, gifts or flowers to their loved one.
