Romfilatelia, the company specialized in editing and trading Romanian postage stamps introduces into circulation the philatelic issue Polar Fauna. The Fauna theme enjoys the highest position in stamp collectors’ preferences and the new issue will complete their collections with six polar animal species, some of them close to extinction.
The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is presented on the stamp with the face value of Lei 0.30. People will commonly call it the polar bear or the white bear because of its fur that is easily mistaken for snow. It is a pretty big animal, 2.5 m, reaching the height of approximately 1.5 m and a weight of up to 700 kg. It can be seen in the arctic icebergs and on the shores of the Adriatic Sea.
The harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus) is presented on the postage stamp with the face value of Lei 0.50. It has a 2.2 meter length and can dive up to 2.5 m deep, being able to stay up to 30 minutes under water. It leaves away from shores, in the free-drifting icebergs of seas and oceans in the Arctic Region. Poaching makes them constantly decrease in number.
The arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) is presented on the postage stamp with the face value of Lei 1.90. It is widespread in the tundra regions of the Northern Hemisphere. During the summer, its fur is rare and gray while in winter, it turns white with long and thick hairs. It hunts small animals by sneaking into their lodges.
The emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is presented on the postage stamp with the face value of Lei 3.30. Having a large waist of 1-2 meters, it can be seen in the Polar Circle area of the Southern Hemisphere. It mates during the winter season. The female will lay a single egg that is then left under the supervision of the male, which holds it between his legs, offering the heat preserved by its feathers. After approximately two months, it is the mother’s duty to feed the cub that has now made his way from the egg.
The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is presented on the postage stamp with the face value of RON 3.60. It can reach a length of approximately 30 m and a weight of 130,000 kg. It is considered to be the largest mammal alive on the planet. It has two nasal recesses on the top of the head. Its mouth has whalebones that will help filter water and nourishment. This is made up of small size sea animals.
The walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) is envisaged on the postage stamp with the face value of Lei 4.30. The walrus can reach up to 4.5 m in length and has a weight of 1000-1500 kg. The food mainly consists of mollusks, which it hunts in shallow waters.
