About Wild Ducks and Geese

Romfilatelia, the company specialized in editing and trading Romanian postage stamps, introduces into circulation the philatelic issue Wild Ducks and Geese.

The birds (Aves class) represent a group of tetrapod vertebrates which have evolved from reptiles, while keeping some features of these animals. They are the first vertebrates which have the possibility of preserving a constant body temperature. The most important characteristic of birds is their flight adaptability. By virtue of this fact, the birds are the most widespread species in the world, breaking down the geographical barriers, traveling on large distances, conquering lands with a harsh climate. The winter and summer migration is widespread with several birds species.

The Aves class includes approximately 8650 species grouped in 28 orders. Birds like ducks, geese, swans are part of the Anseriformes order. The 200 species are grouped in two families. Generally, the birds of this order have a prolonged trunk belly, sometimes heavy, but middle seized. The beak is long, flattened and the tongue is big and smooth. The legs are short, with three palmed fingers and a little thumb, placed in the back. The feathering colours are diversified, for both the females and for the males. The feathers are waterproof, compact and dense on the entire surface of the body. The representatives of the order are good fliers but also good swimmers; they migrate according to the seasons and the nesting places. We can find them in the shore areas of stagnant and running waters, nesting in the margin rush-bed. They do not live in the Antarctic regions.

The following birds are presented on the postage stamps of the issue, both males and females:
