About Anniversaries

Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Independence and the 40th anniversary as a Republic.

Independence - 50th Anniversary (1964-2014)

On 21 September 1964, Malta became an independent state as a constitutional monarchy with QueenElizabeth II as its head of state. On 1 December 1964, Malta was admitted to the United Nations.

Birth of the Republic - 40th Anniversary (1974-2014)
On 13 December 1974, the Constitution of Malta was amended so as to make Malta a republic state, and Sir Anthony Mamo became the country's first President

The stamps marking these historical events were designed by Maltese artist Emvin Cremona and issued in 1964 and 1974 respectively. They are now being jointly reproduced in a miniature sheet format.
