About Trawlers and Multipurpose Fishing Vessels

Fishing companies started operating stern trawlers on a regular basis in Iceland in 1970 while the first stern trawler started fishing about 20 years earlier. Andrés Gunnarsson, a young engineer, introduced the concept of the stern trawler which transformed the entire working conditions of the fishing industry.

There are freezers on board the multipurpose fishing vessels, so the catch can be processed directly.
